PrettyKeithKeith A. Pretty, J.D. President and Chief Executive Officer

The President and Chief Executive Officer is responsible to the trustees of the University for the implementation of their governance directives. He serves as the primary strategist and external relations officer, manages the other officers and affairs of the University and serves as a major fund raiser.

Keith Pretty joined Northwood University as President and CEO on October 2, 2006. He came to Northwood from Walsh College where he served as President for seven years. Prior to Walsh, he was Vice President for external affairs, general counsel at Western Michigan University and President and CEO of the Western Michigan University Foundation. In the private sector, Pretty held governmental affairs positions with Amoco Corporation and became senior Washington representative.

Former Michigan Governor John Engler appointed Pretty to design a state department of Career Development that matched Michigan’s educational resources to its business needs. He earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Western Michigan University and a juris doctor degree from Thomas Cooley Law School in Lansing.

The recipient of many awards and commendations, Pretty was presented with the Western Michigan University Alumni Association’s most prestigious honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award, in 2011. In addition, Pretty is engaged in a number of community activities and serves on the board of directors for Detroit Economic Club, Chemical Bank, Midland Tomorrow, Automotive Hall of Fame, Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Michigan (AICUM), the Lake Huron Area Council-Boy Scouts of America, and the Michigan Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Executive Committee.

StehouwerKristinKristin Stehouwer, Ph.D. Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer/Chief Academic Officer

Dr. Kristin Stehouwer joined Northwood University in 2009 from Macomb Community College where she served as Executive Director of Research and Planning and Vice Provost for Arts and Sciences. Prior to joining Macomb Community College, she served as Director of the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center and Special Advisor to the President at Northwestern Michigan College. She also worked on special assignment to the U.S. Department of Commerce at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and worked in the area of global manufacturing competitiveness, which included a national speaking tour of more than 20 cities.

She earned her doctorate from Northwestern University in Political Science and International Relations. Her graduate studies included International Law at the University of Strasbourg as a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar. Her scholarly work has focused on political and economic cooperation. She also earned a B.A. and M.A. from Northwestern University. She has published numerous articles and made many national presentations. She has worked with organizations in the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa and speaks six languages. She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses at a number of colleges and universities.

Dr. Stehouwer has extensive experience in facilitating and deploying strategy in many types of organizations, including in the financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, education and service sectors. Dr. Stehouwer has entrepreneurial experience and business management experience with large and small organizations including family businesses. She has specialized in the areas of strategic management, performance excellence, process improvement and organization/leadership development. She serves as a senior examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and as an AQIP Systems Appraiser for the Higher Learning Commission.

Stehouwer and her husband, Dr. David Rausch, both Michigan natives, enjoy spending time in northern Michigan.

FeganKevinKevin G. Fegan, Ed.D. President, Northwood Texas Operations and Vice President of Corporate Programming

Kevin Fegan began his Northwood career as head women’s volleyball coach in 1986 while teaching business education and coaching in the Midland Public Schools. He joined Northwood as a staff member in 1987 as Assistant Director of Academic Computer Services and an instructor on the Midland campus. In 1988, he became Registrar for the Midland campus and in 1990 was named Director of Registrar and Academic Counseling. In 1994, he left the traditional program and joined the staff of the Adult Degree Program serving as Associate Dean. In 1998, he was named Dean of the Adult Degree Program. In May 2000, he was elected Provost of the Adult Degree Program and an officer of the college by the Board of Trustees. In May of 2003, Dr. Fegan started in his current role as Provost of the Texas campus. Dr. Fegan was named a Northwood University Outstanding Alumni (1996), recognized by the International Who’s Who of Professionals and Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities and is a member of Delta Mu Delta, Honorary Business Fraternity. Dr. Fegan holds a B.B.A. in marketing and management from Northwood University, an M.A. in educational administration from Central Michigan University and an Ed.D. in curriculum and instruction from Wayne State University.

JustinMarshallJustin Marshall, Vice President of University Advancement and Alumni

Justin W. Marshall is Vice President of Advancement and Alumni Relations at Northwood University in Midland, Mich., and he previously served as Vice President for Advancement for the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. Marshall started at the Center in 2002 as a fiscal policy researcher but switched portfolios to join the Center’s advancement department full time in 2003. He served as the Center’s membership development officer until 2006 and as director of advancement from 2006–2008.

Marshall is a graduate of Northwood University, having received his degree summa cum laude and having triple-majored in economics, business management and hotel, restaurant and resort management. In his final year at Northwood, he won the Arthur E. Turner Award, the university’s most prestigious honor for a graduating student. Marshall also studied abroad at Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing.

Before working at the Center, Marshall helped coordinate events for the Olympic Torch Relay in the run-up to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. He has traveled widely, visiting France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Greece, Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, South Korea, Mexico and New Zealand. He volunteers his time with United Way of Midland County, as a board member with Railway Family Center, and as a charter member of Young Leaders United.

Marshall lives in Midland, Michigan and is a native of Holly, Michigan

NashTimTimothy G. Nash, Ed.D. Senior Vice President, Corporate and Strategic Alliances and David E. Fry FME

Timothy Nash joined Northwood in 1980 and received a B.B.A. from the university, an M.A. in Economics from Central Michigan University and an Ed.D. in curriculum and instruction with his cognate in business administration from Wayne State University. He is an associate professor of Economics and Business for the undergraduate program and is an associate professor of Economics and Public Policy at the DeVos Graduate School. His travels and research have taken him to more than 20 countries from China and Hong Kong to Poland and Norway where he also participated in academic colloquiums. Dr. Nash is an adjunct scholar with the Mackinac Center for Public Policy in Midland and the former State Director of Economic Education for the clergy for the State of Michigan. Dr. Nash has co-authored three books and conducted research and consulting for a number of Fortune 500 companies, GM UAW PEL and the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA). He serves on the boards of the Free Enterprise Institute (FEI) in Houston, Texas, the Midland Academy of Advanced & Creative Studies, Junior Achievement of Central Michigan, Inc. and the Midland Area Chamber of Commerce.

Brian SanduskyBrian Sandusky, Ph.D. Vice President of Enrollment Management

Dr. Sandusky served as vice president of Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas, for four years. Sandusky assumed his duties at this private, multi-campus nonprofit institution in 2008 during a difficult and challenging time. He led a significant change to the institutional enrollment model, resulting in considerable new student growth that contributed to the most improved financial turnaround in the institution’s history. Revenues increased from $27 million in 2008 to $44 million in 2011; net tuition revenues improved 40% during this span. Most importantly, the student experience and outcomes improved noticeably as demonstrated in the front-end yield ratios, academic measures, student surveys and retention rates at both the freshman residential campus and in the adult centers throughout the United States and online. Sandusky has also led a new strategic unit titled Enterprise Division that serves nonprofit organizations and corporations in unique ways by partnering and listening to their needs. Services include executive consulting programs and developing customized learning initiatives to enhance clients’ organizational effectiveness and bottom line. He also served as associate professor with faculty status in the School of Business.

From 2005-2008, Sandusky served as vice president at Bellevue University in Nebraska where he led strategic initiatives and the Human Capital lab along with enrollment management. He was also an adjunct faculty member in the College of Professional Studies at the private, nonprofit, multi-campus institution. From 2003-2005, he was an executive consultant and co-principal of Enrollment Management Consultants in Denver. Prior to that, he was regional manager and senior national enrollment training manager for Alta Colleges based in Denver, Colorado.

Sandusky earned his Ph.D. in business administration from Northcentral University, his master of arts in organizational management from the University of Phoenix and his bachelor of business administration in marketing from Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is married to Jennifer and has two children, Addison and Jakob. Sandusky enjoys reading, teaching, golfing, bicycling and spending time with family and friends. He is a Grand Rapids, Michigan, native.

StephanKarlKarl Stephan, Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer

Karl Stephan is responsible for all financial functions, legal compliance and other business operations for the University. Departments reporting to him include accounting, budgeting, taxation and compliance, information technology, risk management and investments, financial aid, business office, human resources, payroll and auxiliary services. He also serves as Secretary of the Board of Trustees.

Karl earned his undergraduate degree at Yale University and MBA in finance from the University of Chicago.

Stephan joined Northwood University in June, 2007 as its International Controller and was promoted to Assistant Vice President of Finance in September, 2008. He assumed his current responsibilities as the University’s Chief Financial Officer following the retirement of Don Hunkins from this position in July, 2009.

Karl serves on a number of community and professional organizations, including the Board of Directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters in the Great Lakes Bay Region and the AICUM Workers Compensation Board.

Karl came to Northwood after a long career in senior management for the Kmart Corporation and Sears Holdings Corporation. Prior to joining Sears, Roebuck and Co., Karl began his professional career at the public accounting firm of Arthur Andersen & Co.
